What is ego-based consciousness?

Updated: Mar 15, 2022

On an ego-based level, the human entity in on a quest for survival in this world. Exposed to harshness, pressures and expectations, the human entity fears for its existence and therefore initiates a fight through life to build an wealthy and secure environment for itself. As a result, everyday life becomes a struggle, permeated with constant thinking, planning, and preparations for the battles to be won. Regardless of the effort, the human entity does what is necessary to make sure that it will succeed of the mission of staying alive by making use of all its talents, creativity and potentialities.

The human will is however endless. On this path for establishing itself in the world, the human entity goes further and also learns to pursue things that are associated to feelings of success, fulfillment and happiness. Once it learns that, the previous quest for basic needs is extended into one for fulfilling all its material and immaterial desires. Consequently, more effort and time are required and a lot of expectations take place. At this phase, the human entity becomes increasingly more competitive, rigorous and convinced that it is more worthy than others to achieve everything it desires. However, unconscious and reactive, the human entity misinterprets the ways things are in this world by demanding that everything comes out to be exactly as it projected. As a result, it becomes impatient, judgmental, stressed, controlling, dominating, manipulative, and even aggressive. As a deeply capable being, it keeps in fact accomplishing many things, but they are not enough anymore. In other words, it falls into the suffering spiral of being frustrated with what it already has, while continuing desiring what it does not yet possesses.

Since it is convinced that it is doing the right thing, confused and in pain, the human entity then starts to look for subjects to blame for its agony. Being dominated by feelings of anger and hate, the human entity manages to identify perpetrators in members of its own circle or society. According to its own interpretation, those are the ones who are preventing it of fulfilling its desires and feeling peace and happiness. They are the cause of all this suffering. From this point on, the human entity starts believing itself of having enemies and falls into the role of the victim. It blames and accuses other people for its afflictions. It convinces itself that the world is a cruel place and starts isolating itself. Once it sees itself as a helpless victim of surrounding forces, alone and depressed, it surrenders its responsibility of changing its own life and gets lost in its own diminishing feelings and mental patters.

These are the dungeons of the mind. A labyrinth of thoughts, desires and believes in which the human entity locks itself in because if fears for its life. It fears abandonment, rejection and not succeeding. There is nothing wrong in wanting and searching for things in this world. What leads to suffering is the attachment to the expected results and the illusion of what achievement, acceptance, success and love means.
